I don't know a huge amount about comics but have really loved reading Preacher, The Boys, Alias, Watchmen, Maus, and other comics that are not in the normal super hero genre. Does anyone have some more recommendations like these? Or are there any excellent super hero TPBs that can sway me?
Just have a look at the subtitles of the pictures in my Album, because these are already my winners in a very narrow selection of quality. For a more specific recommendation you would have to ask more specifically :)
Thanks, I've just been looking through, nice stuff, just looking for the english versions on Amazon now :), Là où vont nos pères seems may be the one I check out first.
You're not alone. Until a few years ago, I hadn't read a comic book since childhood. Then, an old friend of mine started getting more insistent about certain comic book titles he thought I should read. I must admit, every title I have tried at his behest has been thoroughly addictive. He even managed to give me a superhero title that I found sublime (like you, I have little if any interest in superhero tales, regardless of how much they may been reinvented or turned on their heads). I should point out that my "source" has known me for ten years, so he has a fairly good chance of matching titles to my particular tastes. Not knowing you at all, I cannot promise that all of these will resonate with you as they did with me. Now that the caveats are out of the way, here are the ones that spring readily to mind at the moment, in no particular order:
Transmetropolitan
WE3
Y: The Last Man
Kurt Busiek's Astro City <---- the "superhero" one I mentioned
Fables
I'll try to think of some more later. One word of warning, reading too much of "Y: The Last Man" in a single sitting can make you feel a tad misogynistic for a brief spell (even if you're a woman!). Hope this is of use to you.
For non-supes I'd recommend almost anything by Dan Clowes- Eightball was his comic and most of the stories were collected in individual TPBs like Ghost World, Velvet Glove cast in Iron, Pussey! (i only hated david boring).
I don't recommend Adiran Tomine's stuff, it's like a boring, typical "reality" version of Dan Clowes' work, but a lot of people like it.
Chris Ware's ACME stuff with Jimmy Corrigan is amazing. Really, really sad and depressing, it makes you feel a bit better about your own life!
It was originally done in a bunch of custom sized comic formats and then collected into pretty large hardcovers.
2000A.D.'s Judge Dredd is pretty great. A super hard-nosed cop of the future, basically Judge, Jury and Executioner sanctioned by the state. Lots of TPB collections.
Decent manga stuff would be Lone Wolf and Cub (straight forward samurai ronin stuff), and Blade of the Immortal (samurai with a bit of a supernatural twist).
I really liked the original Dragonball stuff (when Goku was a kid), before it turned into non-stop battles. But even those are interesting.
As for Super-Heroes... I've always been about Iron Man. Self-made superhero with no super powers. Power of Iron Man TPB is a great storyline, Armor Wars is pretty cool but definitely for Iron Man fans.
In a pathetic bid at self publicity dare I recommend http://www.drunkduck.com/Flick_and_Jube/ as a comic that is not in the super hero genre (or any kind of genre for that matter)
